Excellent article. I regret to say I agree with the vast majority of what Peter has to say. Nanny State has us and too many of us love Nanny.

I WILL be voting but it isn't through any real conviction that the Conservatives or Liberal Democrats will be any better. I'm voting to punish the present incumbent as over the last eight years he has behaved in an arrogant, "I know what is best for you", self serving and bigoted manner in just about every field and area of life.

The next one won't be any better but in 4 or 5 years time I can cane that one too by voting them out.

I wrote about this in my blog under the heading "Enjoying the election" which summarises my feelings about politicians in general and how they view the electorate.

Perhaps the Chinese Empire method of selecting public servants should be re-introduced. Only eunuchs could be appointed to office. THAT should discourage those who want to try their brand of madcap social experimentation against the will of the population. Or perhaps a law to state politicians can only serve a fixed number of terms and if a politician does not achieve re-election before the end of their tenure, they should be executed. That might make them more responsive to the will of the electorate.

But of course this will have to be voted in by the politicians and thus will never happen.

As democracy seems to consist of the counting of heads every four or five years, a system of finding and valuation of what is inside them is long overdue. A simple questionaire to assess the political knowledge of the individual is required and a points system established e.g. a score of ten out of ten gives a voter the equivalent of ten voters who score one out of ten.

Why wait until the end, do it first.
