- More than 900 primaries have already warned their local authorities that they will not be giving children SATs exams; teaching unions predict that half of the country's 17, 000 schools will not take the tests. 78% of teachers say that assessing pupils' progress would be better than Sats.

To celebrate its 70th anniversary, children's publisher Puffin has compiled a list of the 70 children's books said to be the best of all time. The list includes Treasure Island, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Peter Pan. Roald Dahl had four books in the top 70.

Pushchair manufacturer Maclaren will pay compensation to more than 40 British children who suffered injuries in their buggies. Most claimants had lost fingertips or a finger in the hinge. Protective hinge covers are only provided on request from the website.
