Today I attended a Thames Gateway London Partnership seminar; ‘Financing the Future of the Thames Gateway’. The Seminar provided an interesting insight into how local governments are beginning to grapple with the new economic climate, and more importantly, the new expectations placed upon them by the Coalition’s devolution and localism policies.
Misunderstanding markets

Yesterday the Irish government finalised a rescue deal worth €85 billion for the country’s beleaguered banks. With all such large financial decisions, the initial test of success was seen to be the reaction of the markets. Thus, we all had to wait until Monday before the markets opened to see how the Irish bailout was received by the financial sector.
What about the NHS’s culture?

In all the talk about what the NHS is going to have to do with its tighter budgets one thing seems to be missing: the underlying culture of the organisation (or, more accurately the organisations that make it up). Discussion is focused on structures, processes and levers that the NHS has, or doesn’t have, at its disposal to drive efficiency.
