Tale of two piers – update
Peter Saunders, 8 August 2014
Five days ago I posted a piece here about Cameron’s gift of £2m of taxpayers’ money to Eastbourne to help rebuild the pier after the fire. In my comments I warned of “robbing Peter to pay Paul. Whenever one special interest group gets paid off, another loses out, and then starts demanding favours too. This is how government spending keeps being ratcheted upwards… taxpayers in Hastings might feel somewhat aggrieved that their tax money is being used to renovate Eastbourne’s pier – especially when their own pier received no such generous treatment, and they had to raise their own funds to ensure the restoration.”
Today’s Hastings Observer leads its front page with the headline: “Where’s our £2m, Mr Cameron?” Enough said!
